Need… Better… Clothing!!!
New Season, New Routine

The Search is On

UPDATE - We got some great selections and here is an updated list.  I'm going to try to check out a couple of these and I'll post later with some results.  If any of you also find some favorable places to shop, I'd love to hear about it.  The list so far:

JC Penny

Edie Bauer

Casual Corner

CJ Banks - www.cjbanks.com

J Jill - I was pleased to see in their catalog that many of shorts listed a "6 inch inseam"!

Macy's - both store brands and their designer labels

J Crew

LL Bean

Target - I did find some OK shorts, Cherokee brand, but they WERE looking pretty matronly (they'll do when you're desperate - even Keen was making faces at these shorts)

Other alternatives:

Skirts in general

Old Navy/Gap men's section - (On a similar note, I've also used Target's mens/boys section in the past to find shorts)

James Perse skirts - I checked these out online and I have to say they look pretty yummy, pricey but yummy

I hope everyone else (at least the girls) finds this list as helpful as I do.  Thanks everyone for your feedback!          - the weirdgirl

Following up from the last post* (my kvetching about not finding suitable shorts – yes, it’s life-altering topics here at the weirdgirl’s house) there were a couple of great suggestions in the comments that I am going to check out.  Namely, places to find shorts that aren’t cut at hootchie length or down to the knee, and summer alternatives to shorts.  Here were the suggestions:

JC Penny

Casual Corner

Eddie Bauer

Skirts in general (for me I need to find ones my son can’t yank off my bum)

So I gots me an idea.  I would LOVE to hear about the places you all shop and/or have found clothes that actually fit women’s bodies well (without making you look frumpy OR skanky).  Because you all know how much I love lists, I’ll post all the suggestions/places you’ve found to be great for REAL WOMEN.  Heck, knowing how much I love to shop I’ll probably run product testing on your suggestions as well.  (I’ll be checking out Mervyn’s selection tomorrow.)  And if any of you out there know of or run a website with clothing for REAL WOMEN, I’d love to hear about those, too.

OK?  Let’s call this the Great Clothing Search.  And… go!

*Yes, I know this is kind of a cop out post but allergies are kicking my butt and I’ve got a headache that could birth Athena.  Plus, I am still a little irritated about the hootchie shorts thing.  (Hootchie skirts on the other hand, perfectly acceptable, especially for adult-only dinners out.)

I have been able to find clothes that fit "real" women at CJ Banks. And, even better, their sizes run a little big. I was able to buy a pair of 8s for the first time in years!

The first thing I had to learn was to stop shopping in the juniors section. Just because they make it in my size doesnt' mean I should wear it!

I shop mostly at Macy's and I, for pants, I like their store brands, Style & Co and Charter Club, as well some some designers....Tommy Hilfiger, Liz Claiborne, and INC are the ones I usually go for first and they always have super clearances so I don't have to pay too much.

Other than that, I wear mens Old Navy and Gap stuff and old man pants from thrift stores.

Great suggestions! I've been flipping through the J Jill catalog and they look promising. I'll have to look up CJ Banks stuff.

Well, that burka comment WASN'T HELPFUL (Igmar!)

Actually, I like Liz Claiborne too. They've got the right idea in cuts.

I have a confession to make, though I don't always go right for the juniors section (because those clothes only rarely fit), I WAS shopping at Old Navy (which is pretty much juniors) because their pants usually fit me well and I was being *ahem* cheap.
I need to get in the habit of going to more Women's stores, but for a long time they never carried my size. Due to the effects of pregnancy, I'm sure that won't be an issue anymore.

WG, I'm going to keep out of this one for the time being. I have NO IDEA about shopping for women's clothes.

I have no idea about shopping for myself, to tell you the truth.

I tend to be a boutique gal myself, which is one of the benefits of living in NYC. I'm not much for shorts, but J Crew has served well in the past for that need, and now that Mickey Drexler of the Gap has taken over the styles are a little less...matronly? I'm liking a new James Perse skirt these days; it's like a sweatshirt with a drawstring waist.

Good luck in the hunt!

Thanks for all the hints/tips. I'm going to try to go shorts-shopping this weekend in between the last minute packing before we move next week.

You know, I've found Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and other great deals at Marshalls/TJ Maxx sometimes. Kohls lately has had jeans that fit me (I'm short waisted) and so cheap that even if I run them into the ground, they were only $10 so...
